La buona notizia sugli animali arriva oggi dagli Stati Uniti, dove si dice che gli sforzi per la conservazione siano riusciti a salvare dall’estinzione una rara specie di iguana. Appena dieci anni fa le iguana blu di Grand Cayman erano sull’orlo dell’estinzione. I fattori umani, come l’invasione dell’habitat e i veicoli che investivano gli esemplari in fuga avevano ridotto il loro numero a circa una ventina di superstiti. Ma ora, grazie agli sforzi instancabili degli attivisti, la specie rara è tornata a sperare di poter sopravvivere.
Negli ultimi dieci anni, i funzionari della Bronx Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Society hanno allevato e rilasciato più di 500 iguane in libertà, riuscendo così ad invertire la tendenza che l’umanità aveva innescato verso la distruzione. Il futuro promettente per le iguana di Grand Cayman è il risultato di molti anni di dedizione da parte di esperti che hanno avviato il Programma di recupero Iguana Blu nel 2002, quando si calcolava che solo 20 esemplari fossero rimasti sulla Terra. I volontari hanno così allevato centinaia di iguane in cattività che sono state poi rimesse nel loro habitat naturale una volta giunte ad un numero considerevole. Secondo un comunicato stampa dalla Wildlife Conservation Society:
Per diversi anni, siamo riusciti ad aggiungere centinaia di animali alla popolazione selvatica a cui sono stati fatti esami sullo stato di salute prima del rilascio
ha spiegato il Dr. Paul Calle, Direttore sanitario zoologico per lo Zoo del Bronx. Fred Burton, direttore del Programma di Recupero Iguana Blu, ha aggiunto:
Ci aspettiamo di raggiungere il nostro obiettivo di 1.000 iguane in aree protette in natura in pochi anni. Dopo di che, si monitoreranno le iguane per assicurarsi che si riproducano in modo sufficiente per mantenere la popolazione selvatica. Se riusciremo ad ottenere risultati positivi, avremo vinto!
Con centinaia di specie sulla lista di quelle in pericolo, e più di un paio considerate a livelli “critici”, il comprovato successo degli sforzi sulla conservazione recentemente volti alla salvezza dell’iguana blu potrebbero non essere un caso isolato. Molte piante e animali stanno diminuendo in tutto il mondo e potrebbero sperimentare i benefici simili a quelli appena ottenuti, con programmi stilati su misura per ogni specie.
Si potrebbe dire che in molti casi, il più grande impedimento alla sopravvivenza a lungo termine di ogni organismo sulla Terra sia una mancanza di consapevolezza sull’importanza della sua conservazione, ma la consapevolezza che il recupero è possibile, anche quando gli individui rimasti sono così pochi, è una grande speranza.
