Che l’inquinamento atmosferico provocasse il tumore non lo scopriamo di certo oggi, ma finché a contestarlo sono le associazioni ambientaliste, interessa a pochi. Ora che è la scienza a sottoscrivere quest’affermazione però, qualcosa potrebbe cambiare. La ricerca è internazionale ma vi ha collaborato anche un istituto italiano, ovvero l’Istituto nazionale dei tumori di Milano ed è stata pubblicata su Lancet Oncology, una delle riviste scientifiche più famose al mondo, probabilmente la più autorevole in materia di oncologia.
Non solo, si legge nello studio, inquinamento e tumore sono fortemente correlati, ma nei Paesi industrializzate il cancro al polmone è la prima causa di morte. E stiamo parlando di numeri altissimi dato che l’ultimo dato completo disponibile per l’Italia, quello del 2010, parla di oltre 31 mila casi. Lo studio non ha riguardato soltanto la nostra nazione ma ha messo a confronto 9 Paesi europei (oltre all’Italia anche Svezia, Norvegia, Danimarca, Olanda, Regno Unito, Austria, Spagna, Grecia) per un totale di 300 mila persone seguite per 13 anni.
Ne è emerso che maggiore è l’esposizione alle polveri sottili (PM10 e PM2,5), maggiori sono le probabilità di contrarre il tumore. Per la precisione ogni 10 microgrammi di PM10 per metro cubo in più corrispondono ad un incremento del 22% del rischio di contrarre il cancro al polmone, e del 18% con un incremento di solo 5 microgrammi. La gran parte di queste polveri vengono prodotte dagli scarichi industriali, quelli delle auto e dagli impianti di riscaldamento.
Chi vive in città non è condannato a morte perché lo studio dimostra che se si va a vivere in un posto meno esposto si dimezza il rischio di contrarre la malattia, e si riduce di un terzo il rischio di contrarre l’adenocarcinoma. A preoccupare inoltre non c’è solo la condizione dei polmoni, in quanto ne risente anche il cuore. Scompensi cardiaci, cuore ingrossato ed altri problemi gravi si manifestano in seguito all’esposizione agli agenti inquinanti, come dimostrano le oltre duemila persone che nel corso dello studio si sono ammalate perché eccessivamente esposte.
