Lo scandalo della carne di cavallo venduta come bovina ha fatto il giro d’Europa e sembra toccare quasi tutti i Paesi del Continente. Finora però non sono stati registrati casi in Italia, ma non è detto che resti sempre così. L’allarme arriva dall’associazione Save the Dogs and Other Animals, la quale non solo ha insinuato che questo tipo di truffa alimentare possa essere avvenuto anche dalle nostre parti, ma anche che oltre ai cavalli possano essere state inserite nel processo produttivo anche le carni di asino.
L’associazione animalista parte da un concetto basilare: la maggior parte della carne equina importata in Italia proviene dalla Romania. Mangiare carne di cavallo in Italia è ritenuto normale, ma il problema è che molti dei cavalli rumeni in realtà sono ex cavalli da corsa che hanno assorbito per tutta la loro vita del vero e proprio doping, delle sostanze anabolizzanti che gli servivano per aumentare la resistenza e per le altre prestazioni, i quali a fine carriera vengono macellati e venduti come commestibili.
In Italia questa è una pratica illegale, i cavalli da corsa non possono essere mangiati, ma con questo traffico le leggi vengono aggirate. Ma non finisce qui. Tra le partite di carne di cavallo, secondo l’associazione, potrebbero essere inserite anche quelle di carne d’asino, non ritenuta commestibile secondo i nostri standard. Infine l’associazione denuncia un’altra possibile violazione, stavolta dei diritti degli animali.
Siccome nell’Est Europa negli ultimi anni si è sviluppata un’epidemia che ha coinvolto gli equini, le leggi europee obbligano a macellare gli animali in loco. Ciò significa che per poter vendere la carne in Italia bisogna uccidere e macellare il cavallo in Italia. La conseguenza è che migliaia di esemplari vivi vengono trasportati per diverse ore da un capo all’altro dell’Europa, aggiungendo la sofferenza di una tortura dovuta al trasporto in camion al triste destino che aspetta questi cavalli all’arrivo a destinazione. Un’altra brutalità che l’associazione, e tutti noi, chiediamo che sia messa al bando.
