La cocaina e le altre droghe sono responsabili non solo di un impatto sul fisico e la mente di chi le assume, ma anche di quello sul pianeta, in una forma che non è facile nemmeno da immaginare. Un esempio? Ma ancora, guardiamo al consumo di elettricità. In questo caso è più che altro la coltivazione di marijuana indoor a fornire un impatto devastante, dato che tenere una serra alle nostre temperature significa consumare delle quantità impressionanti di energia. Piantare questa droga, che per molti non è altro che una semplice piantina, significa sprecare petrolio o carbone ed emettere quantità di CO2 che hanno sulla Terra lo stesso effetto devastante che le droghe hanno sul corpo umano.
Per avere un’idea di cosa ciò significhi, alcuni esperti del Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory hanno calcolato che, per la sola produzione che avviene negli Stati Uniti, il consumo di elettricità dovuto alla creazione delle serre equivale all’1% del consumo nazionale di energia elettrica (quanto 7 grandi centrali elettriche) che equivale a circa 5 miliardi di dollari, o tre miliardi e mezzo di euro. Se una persona volesse coltivarla in casa, sappia che utilizzerà l’energia necessaria per 60 condizionatori d’aria accesi contemporanemente. Per quanto riguarda le emissioni invece, essa equivale a quelle che emettono 3 milioni di automobili ogni anno.
Ma tornando alla cocaina, qui le conseguenze sono tante, e non solo per l’ambiente. A parte l’effetto più forte che fanno sul corpo, bisogna aggiungere la tragedia umana più profonda, la guerra. In molte aree del mondo molto povere, la cocaina è una delle industrie principali, ed i ricavati vanno ad ingrossare le tasche della mafia o dei terroristi. Quando vediamo in tv un bambino con un mitra in mano, molto probabilmente ce l’ha perché sta combattendo, come i suoi fratelli e suo padre, la guerra della droga.
In Colombia migliaia di persone sono state letteralmente cacciate dalle loro terre dai guerriglieri per fare spazio ai terreni da dedicare alla cocaina. Intere famiglie sono state mandate sul lastrico perché gli allevamenti sono stati trasformati in campi coltivati di papavero e simili, e la stima delle autorità sulla perdita di foreste causata dai trafficanti si attesta intorno ai 300 mila ettari all’anno, con conseguenti tonnellate di CO2 liberate nell’atmosfera.
