Ma al peggio non c’è mai fine e così oggi scopriamo che un ristorante di Toronto, in Canada, offre nel proprio menu nientemeno che delle tartarughe. E non soltanto tartarughe comuni (che già di per sé sarebbe uno scandalo) ma una specie in via d’estinzione.
La scoperta è stata fatta la settimana scorsa quando un controllo sanitario ha portato alla luce le carcasse di 31 Apalone spinifera, o tartarughe dal guscio molle spinosa, contenute nel congelatore del ristorante. Questa specie, che da noi farebbe rabbrividire al solo pensiero di addentarla, era il pezzo forte di una zuppa che veniva venduta a peso d’oro. Il tutto agendo nella massima illegalità dato che in Canada esistono meno di un migliaio di esemplari di questo animale e quindi nel Paese è considerato in via di estinzione, anche se a livello mondiale è ancora a rischio minimo.
A venderlo, era facile immaginarlo, non era una trattoria locale che cucinava prodotti tipici, ma come spesso accade in questi casi era un ristorante cinese. Come spiega Peter Paul Van Dijk del Conservation International, intervistato da Star:
