L’Università di Adelaide, in Australia, ha condotto una ricerca sull’impatto dei cambiamenti climatici sugli ecosistemi marini e i risultati non sono affatto incoraggianti.
Stando allo studio – che è basato su oltre seicento esperimenti portati avanti negli oceani in tutto il mondo – il cambiamento climatico sta distruggendo, in maniera sistematica, le diversità e l’abbondanza di specie marine. Si calcola, così, che importanti ecosistemi potrebbero essere danneggiati massicciamente entro il 2050 se non si ridurranno in maniera drastica le emissioni di gas a effetto serra come anche l’inquinamento localizzato.
Secondo Ivan Nagelkerken, biologo marino, gli effetti non sono poi così visibili se considerati singolarmente, ma se si combinano tra di loro (per esempio il riscaldamento globale e l’acidificazione) si nota un ampio effetto: si assisterà, probabilmente, a una riduzione della produzione di gas dimetil-solfuro da parte del plancton oceanico, ritenuto limitante dell’effetto serra. E a lungo andare il cambiamento climatico, come anche gli scarichi fognari e l’eccessiva pesca, porteranno a un peggioramento negli oceani. Per citare sempre Ivan Nagelkerken:
Abbiamo anche scoperto che è molto più probabile che gli animali più in alto nella catena alimentare, compresi i grandi predatori, saranno colpiti più duramente dal cambiamento climatico rispetto alle specie più in basso. Alcune specie potranno beneficiare, i produttori primari come il plancton e le alghe, ma non le specie di pesci più grandi. Si teme un collasso progressivo delle specie, dalla cima della catena alimentare verso il basso.
