Greenwashing
Il neologismo è una sincrasi delle parole green (verde colore dell’ambientalismo) e washing (lavare) e potrebbe essere tradotto con “lavare col verde” o con “lavaggio verde”. Esso indica il fenomeno di marketing per il quale: industrie, entità politiche ed aziende millantano attenzione per la natura, garanzie per l’ambiente e politiche economiche sostenibili inventando o, più spesso ingigantendo, le proprie inconsistenti credenziali verdi al fine di creare una mistificatoria immagine positiva delle proprie attività (o prodotti) distogliendo l’attenzione del pubblico dalle proprie responsabilità nei confronti di comportamenti ed impatti ambientali negativi.
Il termine fu coniato dall’ambientalista newyorkese Jay Westerveld nel 1986 per definire la pratica diffusa in alcune catene di Hotel di incentivare, al motto di “save the environment” il riuso degli asciugamani, pratica che sì faceva indubbiamente risparmiare detersivi ed elettricità al pianeta ma soprattutto faceva incrementare il profitto degli hotel diminuendo considerevolmente una voce di spesa.
Il termine descrive anche la pratica di apporre loghi, nomi o denominazioni (es. il suffisso eco usato impropriamente) che inducano il consumatore a credere che il prodotto, così commercializzato, sia completamente ecologico, etico, sostenibile, quando invece lo è solo per una piccola parte dei suoi ingredienti oppure non lo è affatto. Di questa seconda declinazione del termine è celebre l’esempio della Galaxy chocolate (UK) prodotta con cocco, realmente etico e pulito, ma anche un olio di palma responsabile della deforestazione di Sumatra e del declino dell’orango.
La storia americana del greenwashing è lunga e nutrita di fitte schiere di esponenti più o meno noti e sfacciati. La più nota delle nostrane lavandaie verdi è la Eni che, da qualche estate, si vanta di incoraggiare i suoi dipendenti a non indossare la cravatta nei mesi torridi per alzare di 1 grado la temperatura dei condizionatori, pratica che consente il risparmio di ben 140 tonnellate di CO2 ovvero, dato non esplicitato nella pubblicità, la produzione annuale di CO2 di circa una ventina di italiani.
Per difenderci dai greenwasher ed esercitare il diritto al consumo critico si possono cercare le schede dei prodotti ed i relativi giudizi basati sui parametri di: ambiente, salute ed etica sociale su GoodGuide e su GreenWikia (versione ecologista di wikipedia).
