E’ stato firmato un questi giorni un decreto per tutelare gli scoiattoli auoctoni, ossia quelli nati e cresciuti nel luogo in cui vivono, l’Italia. Il dispositivo, firmato dai ministri dell’Ambiente Corrado Clini, dell’Agricoltura Mario Catania e dello Sviluppo Economico Corrado Passera, vieta in sostanza il commercio, l’allevamento e il possesso di esemplari di scoiattoli non nati e cresciuti nel nostro Paese.
Lo scoiattolo “nostrano” va tutelato, spiega Legambiente, perché la sua esistenza è fortemente minacciata da altre specie alloctone che in alcuni casi, come ad esempio nella regione Piemonte, hanno difatto sostituito lo scoiattolo rosso. Si tratta degli esemplari di scoiattolo grigio, di scoiattolo di Pallas e dello scoiattolo volpe, molto più aggressivi dello scoiattolo rosso. Il controllo e il divieto della commercializzazione e allevamento degli esemplari alloctoni in Italia potrebbe proteggerlo dall’estinzione, come spiega il responsabile Fauna e benessere animale di Legambiente, Antonino Morabito
E’ un’importante e positiva novità. Per la prima volta ecco un testo che affronta la questione del commercio degli animali e non soltanto il contenimento sul territorio degli scoiattoli alloctoni. Le misure di controllo, infatti, hanno ben poco senso finchè è consentito allevare e commercializzare le specie incriminate. Di fatto, questo testo tutela sia lo scoiattolo rosso che le altre specie, di cui impedisce anche l’allevamento in cattività. Un ottimo inizio per il 2013 per la tutela degli animali.

Considerato che l’evidenza scientifica ha dimostrato il rilevante impatto ecologico delle specie di scoiattoli alloctoni sulla specie nativa e considerato che gli scoiattoli alloctoni risultano presenti in Italia con più nuclei distinti e che tale accertata presenza nel nostro Paese comporta un grave rischio di diffusione ed espansione della specie in buona parte dell’Europa continentale.
Non ci resta che attendere che il decreto a tutela degli scoiattoli venga pubblicato in Gazzetta Ufficiale.
