Era il 20 aprile 2010 quando la piattaforma petrolifera Deepwater Horizon ha cominciato a sversare nelle acque del Golfo del Messico il petrolio dal pozzo Macondo, situato a oltre 1.500 metri di profondità.
La marea nera a distanza di mesi dal disastro, e dopo la chiusura della falla, torna a far parlare di sé. Dopo l’annuncio dei progetti per ristabilire la vita marina nelle acque del Golfo, come il 100-1000 partnership, la BP potrebbe essere responsabile della morìa dei coralli giganti che vivevano vicino al pozzo della piattaforma petrolifera.
Lo ha rilevato la spedizione scientifica a bordo della nave oceanografica Ronald H. Brown che ha analizzato i fondali vicino al pozzo Macondo. Come ha dichiarato Timothy Shank, uno dei ricercatori della Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
I coralli giganti nelle vicinanze del pozzo sono coperti da una sostanza nera e o sono morti o stanno morendo. In qualche caso sono rimasti soltanto scheletri.
La fauna marina è stata quella più danneggiata dal disastro ambientale del Golfo del Messico, ricordiamo l’allarme per il cavalluccio marino nano, già specie a rischio estinzione, ma ora anche i coralli giganti sono seriamente minacciati. La spedizione scientifica ha rilevato che il 90% di 40 gruppi di coralli, compresi in un raggio di circa 400 metri attorno al pozzo, sono stati danneggiati o stanno morendo. Le cause? l’esposizione al petrolio, l’impiego di disperdenti chimici e la mancanza di ossigeno. Come ha spiegato lo studioso
La vicinanza al sito del disastro e la profondità sono più che una pistola fumante, sono un cannone fumante. Quello che abbiamo trovato è il frutto dell’esposizione al petrolio, ai disperdenti chimici e all’acqua deprivata di ossigeno.
I coralli più distanti dall’area del pozzo non sembrano aver subito danni, eppure gli esperti temono di aver scoperto solo la “punta di un iceberg” di quello che può essere accaduto nei fondali marini e nell’intero ecosistema del Golfo del Messico dopo il disastro.
