Accumulare meno per vivere meglio e ridurre l’impatto ambientale

La ricchezza di una persona si misura in base alle cose di cui riesce a fare a meno. Se questo Natale vi siete concessi poche spese per risparmiare, per principio o per mancanza di fondi, forse avete comunque parecchie cose di cui essere felici. Un articolo apparso su Mother Nature Network mi ha offerto lo spunto per una riflessione che mi piacerebbe condividere con voi e che spero possa essere d’aiuto per orientare le nostre scelte nell’anno che sta per iniziare.

Durante le feste si torna a parlare di consumismo e di quanto spesso ci si circondi di oggetti inutili e costosi, o si butti via il vecchio più per un gesto simbolico che ha a che vedere con un cambiamento di vita che perché ormai è inutilizzabile. Un tema, quello dell’accumulo di beni, caro alla sostenibilità ambientale. Pensiamo a tutti i rifiuti che vengono prodotti dagli sprechi, dal comprare e cucinare cibo in eccesso, dal consumo non equo di risorse che fa pendere la bilancia dalla nostra parte, privando i Paesi del Sud del mondo persino dei beni di prima necessità.

L’ultima frontiera del consumismo riguarda l’acquisto di apparecchi elettronici di nuova generazione che porta all’invecchiamento precoce di un cellulare comprato il mese precedente, quando va bene, e già non al passo con i tempi. Un accanimento all’ultimo modello che mette in circolo sempre più rifiuti tecnologici. Con questo non si vuole dire di rinunciare al progresso e all’innovazione tecnologica, tutt’altro, ma magari provare a far durare più di un mese un telefono o un computer senza sentire già il bisogno di cambiarlo, sarebbe già qualcosa.

Se avere tutto quello che si desidera rende felici, perché molte persone che hanno tutto sono infelici? Questo è un buon punto di partenza per imparare a capire che una casa piena non potrà mai colmare una vita vuota. E’ come quando si ha troppo del proprio gelato preferito, ad un certo punto viene la nausea e si allontana dalla bocca l’ennesima cucchiaiata.
E’ difficile trovare le uscite in un centro commerciale, fateci caso, tutto è predisposto per farci andare alla ricerca di un qualcosa e farci imbattere continuamente negli stessi oggetti di cui in realtà non abbiamo bisogno,  fino alla nausea, fino all’esaurimento della voglia di comprare e di cercare, girando in tondo… ma per trovare noi stessi dovremmo semplicemente imboccare la porta.

Altra ragione per cui essere felici di non accumulare volontariamente o di non potersi permettere di farlo è che con poche risorse a disposizione si aguzza l’ingegno e si migliorano le abilità personali per cavarsela. Benigni, quando vinse l’Oscar per La vita è bella, ringraziò i genitori per il regalo più bello che gli avevano fatto: la povertà.

Che si tratti di fare a meno di un elettrodomestico specifico in cucina piuttosto che del riutilizzo di oggetti che si hanno già. Faccio un esempio banale, ultimamente in commercio esiste il porta-tutto di ogni cosa, in plastica ovviamente. Ho visto in giro il porta-scope e mi sono sentita un po’ imbecille lì per lì perché io le appoggio ancora al muro e non sembrano avere bisogno di sostegno, o il porta-cipolle, il porta-reggiseno in lavatrice, il porta-limone. Ecco, se pensiamo che basta riutilizzare i contenitori che abbiamo già per conservare la cipolla e l’aglio ci rendiamo conto di quanto l’industria ci porti ad avere bisogno di cose assurde.

Tutti questi oggetti inutili sono a buon mercato, ecco perché siamo ancora più invogliati a comprarli e forse non è un caso che costino poco. Spesso possiamo permetterceli senza problemi. Ma la verità è che le cose che costano poco sono di cattiva qualità e non durano a lungo. Il mio primo cellulare è venuto a costare molto ma è durato 5 anni prima di rompersi definitivamente. Oggi si è fortunati se dopo qualche mese la batteria ancora regge e lo schermo è tutto intero ma non ci poniamo molti problemi dal momento che si ricompra con poco. Spesso costa più sostituire la batteria che comprare un telefono nuovo o mandarlo in assistenza. E i rifiuti crescono, molto spesso di tratta di rifiuti pericolosi, difficili da smaltire e gestire.

Infine, comprare meno significa avere bisogno di meno spazio in casa, meno armadi, meno mobili, meno di tutto. Il che si traduce in consumi inferiori e risparmio. A conti fatti, è una lezione di antica saggezza quella che potrebbe salvare il mondo, e forse più che il mondo che ci sarà comunque per milioni di anni, noi stessi: vivere meglio non include necessariamente avere più cose, ma utilizzare le risorse a disposizione in modo più intelligente, riuscire a fare molto avendo poco da cui partire regala certamente anche maggiori soddisfazioni. In un contesto più ampio, prendere il vento, catturare il sole, smettendola di trivellare a migliaia di metri di profondità per ottenere energia. Questa è la vera sfida.  La Terra ringrazia.
