Lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai è ormai certificato. Anche se ormai le persone che non ci credevano sono rimaste davvero poche, se ci fosse stato bisogno di una prova certa, ecco che la fornisce il satellite Envisat. Secondo i dati raccolti dal professor Helmut Rott dell’Università di Innsbruck, in Austria, nella zona dell’Antartide dal 2002 ad oggi si sono persi circa 2 mila chilometri quadrati di ghiaccio, di cui 1790 solo sulla piattaforma Larsen B.
Il satellite Envisat fa parte del programma aerospaziale europeo, e certifica i dati, già raccolti dai suoi predecessori, di un continuo ed inesorabile scioglimento. Il satellite riprende la
rapida ritirata della piattaforma di ghiaccio in Antartide causata dal riscaldamento climatico
ha spiegato il docente, che imputa il fenomeno ad un incremento medio di 2,5 gradi della temperatura negli ultimi 50 anni. E se ci fosse bisogno di un ulteriore prova, questa ricerca è stata fatta sul ghiacciaio Larsen B perché il Larsen A non esiste più. Questo ammasso di acqua ghiacciata infatti si è completamente sciolto negli corso degli anni ’90, il che certifica ulteriormente che il processo non è iniziato oggi ma va avanti da qualche decennio. E lo stato di salute dei suoi “fratelli” non è tanto migliore.
Con questa enorme perdita, che va ad aggiungersi a quelle precedenti, il ghiacciaio Larsen B si calcola si sia più o meno dimezzato rispetto alla sua quantità originale nel 2002, anno in cui sono iniziate le rilevazioni dell’Envisat, ed oggi si è ridotto a circa un decimo di quanto non fosse 17 anni fa, mentre il Larsen C, considerato finora l’unico stabile perché non ha perso quantità di ghiaccio rilevanti, ha però cominciato ad assottigliarsi, e questi effetti si notano soprattutto nella fase estiva. Aumenti delle temperature simili sono chiaramente imputabili alle attività umane, e con l’incremento dello sfruttamento delle risorse ai poli la situazione non può far altro che peggiorare in futuro.
