Avvolte dal fumo e dei cantieri navali, Newcastle una volta era un importante centro industriale. Ma la città è stata trasformata nella città più ecologica della Gran Bretagna negli ultimi anni, secondo una verifica della sostenibilità effettuata dal quotidiano The Guardian. Newcastle è stata un po’ una sorpresa, dato che ha superato le città che in genere vengono in mente quando i britannici pensano che una città sia “verde”, come Bristol e Brighton & Hove, le quali però si sono classificate seconda e terza, rispettivamente.
Ma forse gli inglesi non avrebbero dovuto essere poi così sorpresi. Newcastle si è rapidamente spostata in classifica negli anni scorsi: la città, situata nel nord dell’Inghilterra, è arrivata ottava nel 2007, e lo scorso anno è salita fino al quarto posto prima di saltare in cima nel 2009.
Newcastle stabilisce un mirabile esempio per le altre città, ha spiegato Peter Madden del Forum for the Future, che produce la classifica annuale:

La città ha ridotto le emissioni di carbonio, limitando l’uso dell’automobile e riducendo le emissioni del sistema di trasporto pubblico, dice John Shipley, leader del Newcastle City Council:
Riteniamo di essere sulla strada che porta alla riduzione delle emissioni di CO2 nel settore dei trasporti e aiuta a prepararci per un’economia a basse emissioni di carbonio.
