Le immagini dei fondali dell’Oceano Artico sono state rese note da poche ore da Greepeace, eppure gli scatti meravigliosi e il video della spedizione “Artic Under Pressure” su YouTube ha già ricevuto migliaia di visite!
Anemoni di mare, coralli molli, tunicati e specie spettacolari che vivono nei fondali del Polo Nord rischiano di sparire per sempre se l’uomo non interviene subito per fermare lo scempio che sta facendo del nostro Pianeta. L’aumento della temperatura globale e il conseguente ritirarsi dei ghiacci del circolo polare artico stanno favorendo la pesca industriale e le esplorazioni petrolifere in acque ancora incontaminate, mai raggiunte dall’uomo.
Le reti a strascico dei pescherecci e le esplorazioni petrolifere potrebbere distruggere per sempre la vita presente nei fondali del Polo Nord, per questo Greenpeace rivolge a tutti un appello, chiedendo una moratoria internazionale per vietare ogni attività industriale nell’Oceano Artico.
Negli USA questo già avviene nelle acque a nord dello Stretto di Bering, dove il presidente Obama ha imposto il divieto per ogni attività di pesca. Fermare la pesca a strascico nell’Oceano Artico non comporterà danni significativi per l’economia ittica globale ma, come spiegano gli attivisti di Greenpeace
Una sola stagione di pesca distruttiva potrebbe completamente devastare ampie aree marine. I tempi di crescita di un ecosistema simile sono così lenti che ci vorrebbero anni per un completo recupero. Chiediamo l’immediata protezione di queste acque e il blocco di qualsiasi attività industriale fino a quando la comunità scientifica non abbia adeguatamente studiato questo ecosistema e gli impatti dei cambiamenti climatici su di esso.
“Artic Under Pressure“, la spedizione di Greenpeace a bordo della rompighiaccio Esperanza è partita il 24 maggio scorso e terminerà a metà settembre. Un gruppo di scienziati dell’Istituto di ricerca tedescoIFM- GEOMAR sta affiancando gli operatori di Greenpeace per monitorare i fondali marini e l’ecosistema nei pressi dell’Arcipelago della isole Svalbard nel mar Glaciale Artico. La spedizione fornirà dati sull’acidificazione del mare, sullo scioglimento dei ghiacciai polari e verificherà quali sono i danni causati dalla crescita della pesca industrializzata.
