La commissione Ambiente del Consiglio regionale del Lazio ha dato parere favorevole, a maggioranza di 5 voti con 1 astenuto, per l’apertura di tre nuove cave a cielo aperto nella regione Lazio. Le concessioni sono state date alla società Travertino Morelli F. & C. per l’estrazione di travertino nella località Le Fosse, nel Comune di Guidonia Montecelio, in Provincia di Roma dove la qualità della vita e l’inquinamento atmosferico è già fortemente compromesso da numerose altre cave di travertino, dalle cementerie che lavorano il materiale estratto e dalla discarica dell’Inviolata che peraltro si appresta ad accogliere anche la spazzatura di Roma, per la prossima chiusura della discarica di Malagrotta, e la già annunciata apertura di una nuova discarica nei pressi dell’Inviolata.
Le altre cave saranno aperte nel territorio di Arlena di Castro, in provincia di Viterbo, dove si autorizza la società Pom. Vit., con sede a Pistoia, ad aprire una nuova cava di pomice; ed infine nel comune di Tuscania, della medesima provincia di Viterbo, dove il gruppo Leone s.r.l., con sede a Riccione, ha ottenuto la concessione per gestire la cava di pomice sita nella località di Muracciole.
Vorrei analizzare in dettaglio la situazione ambientale del comune di Guidonia Montecelio, in quanto proprio 
da questa area lo scorso anno Legambiente ha cominciato la campagna Mal’aria industriale sull’inquinamento atmosferico da attivitaà produttive. In questa località alle porte di Roma, con una popolazione di oltre 80.000 abitanti, convivono il più realtà inquinanti e dannose per la salute: la discarica dell’Inviolata, il cementificio, e l’industria estrattiva. La discarica con l’annesso Parco naturale, un ossimoro per definizione, oramai ha trasformato il paesaggio in quanto ha aggiunto una collina, ma di rifiuti che occupa un’area di 3.800.000 metri cubi e di oltre 140 metri di altezza. Il cementificio, come si legge nel Dossier di Legambiente, è stato definito dallo stesso Piano 
Regionale di risanamento della qualità dell’aria, “un’area critica“, per la quantità di sostanze tossiche e dannose per la salute rilasciate nell’aria oltre i valori di soglia. Le cave di travertino oltre al danno ambientale, sono resposabili della dispersione di polveri nell’aria. Negli ultimi anni hanno creato inoltre un forte conflitto tra urbanizzazione ed esercizio delle cave. Davvero il Comune di Guidonia Montecelio ha bisogno di una nuova cava di travertino?
