I primi tre tentativi di tappare la falla nel Golfo del Messico sono falliti miseramente. Fino a questo momento, dicono gli ingegneri della BP, si è riuscito a recuperare l’equivalente di mille barili, poco rispetto alla quantità persa, ma un buon inizio, anche se per avere un’idea più completa bisognerà aspettare 48 ore. Nel frattempo però monta la furia di Obama.
Il presidente degli Stati Uniti si è scagliato contro il colosso britannico in quanto ha appena reso noto di aver distribuito i dividendi tra gli azionisti per miliardi di dollari (si parla di una produzione annua di circa 16 miliardi), ma nel frattempo i risarcimenti alle popolazioni colpite vengono elargiti con il contagocce. La Casa Bianca ha presentato ieri un primo conto dei danni che ammonta a 69 milioni di dollari (circa 56 milioni di euro), spesi dal governo per la lotta contro la marea nera. Ma secondo le prime stime, il disastro è costato un miliardo di dollari, che salirebbe fino a 20 miliardi comprendendo le spese di ripulitura ed i risarcimenti ai pescatori e all’industria turistica successivi alla risoluzione del problema.
E mentre la BP cerca di attuare già un piano E (evidentemente non si fidano nemmeno della soluzione attuata in questi giorni), gli animali continuano a morire. Entro metà agosto la compagnia britannica ha intenzione di scavare altri due pozzi di petrolio nelle vicinanze di quello incendiato, in maniera tale da ridurre la pressione e rendere la falla più facile da tappare. Ma i miliardi di litri sputati in mare nelle ultime 6 settimane, e chissà quanti saranno quelli che verranno ancora espulsi, continuano ad uccidere migliaia di esseri viventi.
