I pannolini sono tra i rifiuti più inquinanti

I bebè crescono in fretta, i loro pannolini impiegano 500 anni per degradarsi. Sono fatti di polpa di legno e plastica a mezzo di processi chimici industriali utili a garantire il massimo assorbimento. Ogni piccolo viene avvolto, nei soli primi 3 anni di vita, da una media di 4500 pannolini, che, tradotti nella polpa di legno utilizzata per produrli, corrispondono a circa 20 alberi di grandi dimensioni. Una recente ricerca di Greenplanet afferma che:

Nel nostro Paese ogni giorno vengono utilizzati circa sei milioni di pannolini che, una volta gettati via diventano una pericolosa fonte di inquinamento. Non solo per i materiali e i processi per realizzarli ma anche perché, sommati insieme, rappresentano ben il 10% di tutti i rifiuti urbani; inoltre si tratta di rifiuti con tempi di smaltimento lunghissimi che necessitano di circa 500 anni per decomporsi. Ma c’è anche un’altra problematica legata ai pannolini usa e getta per i bebé: la presenza di rifiuti organici rischia di provocare contaminazioni sia nel terreno sia nelle falde acquifere.

Oltre a costituire una tipologia di rifiuti estremamente inquinante e impossibile da riciclare e differenziare, nei cassonetti le fermentazioni alle quali i pannolini sono soggetti si rendono strato di coltura fertile per alcuni microbi che possono convertire i cassonetti in focolai infettivi.

Inoltre i pannolini rappresentano un costo consistente per i bilanci dei nuclei familiari. Una confezione “usa e getta” costa circa 10 euro, l´utilizzo medio è di almeno un pacco a settimana pertanto si spendono circa 40 euro mensili che diventano 500 euro nell’arco di un anno.

Ai pannolini-bomba ecologica c’è un’alternativa: quelli, sempre usa e getta ma ecologici, realizzati con materiali quali Mater bio in Pla, un prodotto costituito dagli zuccheri degli amidi vegetali, non trattati chimicamente e  creati senza utilizzare resine sintetiche, sono anallergici ed i loro prezzi sono lievemente superiori a quelli tradizionali. Sono difficili da reperire nei supermercati ma si trovano facilmente on line.

Un’alternativa meno pratica ma più economica è rappresentata dai pannolini lavabili che consentono un risparmio iniziale molto elevato che, compresi i costi del lavaggio, arriva fino al 50 per cento. Per incentivare l’utilizzo di pannolini ecologici il virtuoso sindaco di Acquanegra in provincia di Cremona, ha offerto un contributo pari al 50 per cento della spesa alle famiglie che sceglieranno i pannolini a basso impatto ambientale. C’è da augurarsi che in molti seguano il suo esempio.

Anche gli assorbenti femminili hanno problematiche simili ed anche per questi si trovano varianti eco come il dispositivo in lattice detto Mooncup, una coppetta lavabile e riutilizzabile più volte.
